People use the following categories for three reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They <i>encourage<\/i> <i>brainstorming. <\/i>If you consider these categories and what people are doing, you will not leave out something important<\/li>\n<li>They help to <i>organize<\/i> <i>information<\/i> and to identify relationships<\/li>\n<li>They <i>force<\/i> <i>disaggregation<\/i>\u2014if something fits in more than one, you can unpack it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><a title=\"Systems and Institutions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.principletopractice.org\/from-principle-to-practice\/do-no-harm-saves-categories\/systems-and-institutions\/\">Systems and Institutions<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>How do people organize themselves for action? How do communities organize service provision? What are the structures that people belong to and that organize their activities?<\/p>\n<p>Militias and militaries. Police departments and legal systems. Energy and water supplies.<\/p>\n<p><i><a title=\"Attitudes and Actions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.principletopractice.org\/from-principle-to-practice\/do-no-harm-saves-categories\/attitudes-and-actions\/\">Attitudes and Actions<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>How do people treat one another? How do people talk about and to one another? What acts of violence or kindness do people exhibit?<\/p>\n<p>Reconciliation and forgiveness. Grenades and gunfire. Discrimination and insults. Racism or tolerance.<\/p>\n<p><i><a title=\"Values and Interests\" href=\"http:\/\/www.principletopractice.org\/from-principle-to-practice\/do-no-harm-saves-categories\/values-and-interests\/\">Values and Interests<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>How do people think of themselves as good people? How do people make use of resources in order to meet their needs?<\/p>\n<p>Is land common or private? Is religion welcoming or aggressive?<\/p>\n<p><i><a title=\"Experiences\" href=\"http:\/\/www.principletopractice.org\/from-principle-to-practice\/do-no-harm-saves-categories\/experiences\/\">Experiences<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Do people interpret history selectively or broadly? How do they interpret recent events or their own experiences? How do people interpret the cultures of others around them?<\/p>\n<p><i><a title=\"Symbols and Occasions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.principletopractice.org\/from-principle-to-practice\/do-no-harm-saves-categories\/symbols-and-occasions\/\">Symbols and Occasions<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>How do people demonstrate which groups they belong to?<\/p>\n<p>Flags and fireworks. Icons and idols. Colors and costumes. Yet Mary and I missed it for years!<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt was finally pointed out to me by colleagues in Kenya who had been using it for years. I have subsequently learned that several groups around the world had been using the acronym, thinking it was intentional. The mind is a funny thing.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nAnd Mary still doesn\u2019t remember what the acronym stands for even though she knows the categories!
